Soufriere captures under-16 schools netball title

How sweet it is! The Soufriere Secondary School Under-16 Netball team celebrating their finals victory over Micoud Secondary on Friday at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Complex. Winning definitely means Soufriere is very capable. Like we said from the beginning although sometimes we are treated unfairly in all areas of sports, however we proved to them today that the junior team is number one on the island.” The opening remarks came from team official Chresentia Combie, of the victorious Soufriere Secondary School team. They captured the Under-16 Netball title Friday afternoon at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. In the finals they defeated Micoud Secondary 35-17. With the game over, Soufriere players, officials and supporters, which included enthusiastic drummers celebrated on the court, which culminated with the singing of the schools song. Goal attack Iannya Hippolyte led the winning side netting 26 of 33 attempts while goal shoot Shaneika Andrew hit on 12 of 24 attempts. For Micoud, Isaline Thomas sank 14 of 22 attempts while Antora Jn Pierre made three of 10. Soufriere deserved the victory. In winning Combie feels they prevailed despite the odds. “In almost every sport we have not been satisfied with some of the responses and some of the referees calls,” said Combie. “Our students have always been disciplined while other teams show indiscipline and they get no penalty for it.” Reading between the lines it is rather obvious her comments concerning indiscipline, pertain to a recent netball game between Gros Islet Secondary School and Micoud Secondary School. In that contest, Gros Islet failed to complete the game after walking off the court in the third quarter. The matter was investigated but it has not yet been made public if any action was or will be taken by the ministry. Friday’s final was a bitter loss for Micoud who abandoned their game plan. When asked where her team went wrong, Assistant Coach, Vigna Antoine replied: “My team is one with a lot of potential but sometimes they get intimated. Intimidation played a lot in this afternoon’s game, however, we congratulate them [Soufriere] and we’re happy that the trophy stays in the South.” Antoine concluded the interview with this stern warning. “Soufriere should be aware that we will come next year better prepared. So look out for Micoud Secondary School!” In an earlier game, Vieux Fort Comprehensive won the third place playoff, following a 32-15 win over Babonneau Secondary School.
