Rotary Club in drive to help needy at Christmas

The Rotary Club of San Fernando South is seeking to benefit from some of the goodwill of the Christmas season as it prepares to launch its annual donation drive. Rotary club President Dev Gosine, speaking with the Guardian at the club’s charity brunch yesterday at Naparima Boys’ College, San Fernando, said later this week barrels will be placed at schools in the Southern district for collection of foodstuff and toys for distribution to needy families. “There are children who have toys that are in very good condition so we want to collect those things and redistribute those things to needy children ,” he said. He said the brunch was also part of the Club’s charity drive to raise funds in aid of its Christmas treat for children at various schools.

\Gosine said the Club has decided to expand the number of children to get Christmas treats this year and they are aiming to bring joy to 1500 pupils in various schools from Cedros to San Fernando. He said many families are in need of assistance and it brings “a joy to your heart to see the happiness on these children’s faces.” “There are definitely more people in need and at some point there has to be a cut off. A lot of schools really do not have the means to do that (distribute to the needy.) This is why we do not only want the Christmas spirit to be around this time but throughout the year and that is important,” he said.
