The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD) is announcing that there has been an extension for nominations for awards for persons and companies who cater to the Jamaican disabilities population.
The winners from the nominated the nation’s Inaugural Disabilities Friendly Award Gala slated to occur Monday November 19 -2012.
The first week in November is observed as national disabilities week in Jamaica. The new date for nominations to close is Saturday October 6, 2012 at 5 in the afternoon of that day.
The previous deadline for closure of nominations was this Friday September 21, 2012.
The nomination process was launched on August 22-2012.
The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD) is seeking to award inspirational persons or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to improve the lives of adults and/or children with disabilities.
In addition the function is geared at recognizing via an award a hotel that is championing the way to create an accessible experience for persons with disabilities. The awards which will be handed out at a ceremony at the Wyndham Kingston on the night of the Inaugural Disabilities Friendly Awards Gala fall under seven main categories.
According to Public Education Sub-Committee Chairman for the National Advisory Board for persons with Disabilities Maia Chung the categories are: Disability Friendly Lifetime Achievement Award, Disability Friendly Excellence in Accessibility Award, Disability Friendly Hotel Award, Disability Friendly Business Award, Disability Friendly Excellence in Special Education Award, Disability Friendly Excellence in Parenting Award and Disability Friendly Positive Images in the Media Award.

Miss Chung adds that Jamaica 50 Secretariat has endorsed the nation’s first Disabilities Friendly Gala an event to further enhance the access of the nation’s disabled populace.
The theme of the gala is Jamaica Removing Barriers…Creating Access which is this year’s United Nation’s 2012 World Disability theme.
Organization of the event is spearheaded by the JCPD in tandem with Ministry of Labor Social and Security, the National Advisory Board for Persons with Disabilities; as well as other stakeholders and partners within the disabilities sector. Other objectives of the Gala include lifting of disabilities issues on the national developmental agenda; to raise funds in support of the sector and to promote greater awareness around issues of accessibility for persons with disabilities, to the private sector.
Miss Chung indicated that the event has also received endorsement from the Ministry of Tourism, as well as the Ministry of Youth and Culture.
