Trinidad Muslim League (TML) School, San Fernando has shown that it does not just excel in the academic field, having consistently produced numerous top 100, top ten and number one performances in the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) primary school examinations. During the past six weeks many of its standard one, two, three and four students participated in the annual National Gas Company Sanfest Competition held at the Creative Arts Centre, Circular Road, San Fernando and copped 15 prizes and awards and many certificates of excellence at the Command Performance held at Naparima Bowl on November 9. Sanfest is open to all primary and secondary schools and allows students to compete in the fields of Drama, Dance, Art, Craft and Music.
TML competed in the primary school division in a number of categories, among them the very popular chorale speaking, which saw boys and girls under the expert tutelage of Salima Khan-Sirju deliver their rendition of Homework Makes Me Squirm by Zennie De Silva. The school also competed in the singing category, rendering the folk classic, Yellow Bird and God Bless our Nation; in the instrument category with the multi-talented Ajish Mohip performing on tabla, keyboard and drums all in one and Evans Pathik performing Moo Cow Blues on the violin; in dance with an Indian classical dance solo performed by Kerisse Maharaj. The school also received certificates of excellence in the drama category in the Story Telling, Verse Speaking and Monologue divisions.
Troy Samlalsingh won the overall Story Telling category with Julius Caesar’s—a Marc Antony perspective. TML also received a number of certificates of excellence in Dialect and Standard Poetry, Short Story and Skit Writing, with overall winners being Celine Mohammed and Vishal Dulan in Dialect Poetry and Skit Writing. In addition, the school was awarded a number of certificates of excellence in Visual Arts. The crowning glory, however, was retaining the best skit award with its production of the well received Confessions of a Real Bully, an original piece written and produced by Toni-Ann Lima-Harricharan. The play was written in keeping with recent initiatives by the Ministry of Education in the prevention and minimising of bullying in the school place. Set design and sound was done by Elvis Harricharan. This team also gave TML its first win in this category with Another Scrooge Story. TML also walked away with Best Stage Management and Best Actor and Best Actress titles in Troy Samlalsingh and Sydney Mohammed respectively.
