San Fernando is alive and well and 2015 will be “one of the most memorable Carnival seasons the city has ever experienced,” promised deputy mayor Junia Regrello, the convenor of Carnival 2015.
Regrello said one of the exciting events planned for 2015 is the return of the re-enactment of the Canboulay Riots to San Fernando, carded to take place at Skinner Park on the Thursday before Carnival. The only time this re-enactment was held in San Fernando was for Carnival 2010, during Regrello’s tenure as MP for San Fernando West.
Skinner Park is also the venue for the stick fighting finals.
At the Coffee Street launch on Sunday night, several of the top band leaders gave a sneak peak of their offering for next year’s festivities, even though some complained potential masqueraders were still playing the waiting game—because of the Ebola scare—before committing to playing next year.
San Fernando Mayor Kazim Hosein and Regrello both commended the young people for their discipline, pointing out that the launch and the night mas session on Coffee Street the night before, were both incident free. Regrello said the stabbing incident at Seon’s bar at the lower end of Coffee Street was not linked to the events commemorating City Week.
