Denesha Johnson and Nicole Thomas are the new Miss Windward Afro Queen and Calypso Competition winners, respectively. The two women copped the titles at the Cyd Gray Complex in Roxborough, Tobago, last Saturday. Hosted by the Tobago Festivals Commission and the Windward Carnival Development Committee, the competition is in its 42nd year and saw 11 queens and ten calypsonians vie for what is arguably the biggest competition of its kind on the sister island. The queens came out in their Afro gowns, before all ten calypsonians attempted to impress the judges to dethrone defending champion Lennox Trotman.

Derrick McMillan aka Stickey, who eventually placed third, was a crowd favourite with his ditty, Since Manning Gone. He placed strong emphasis on the view that a new government was in control but the same problems existed, concluding that former prime minister Patrick Manning was not the problem. Dillon Thomas, brother of Nicole Thomas, took second place with the inspirational song, Guide Them. Nicole was the Spirit of Truth, as she articulated her concerns about issues that were deemed detrimental to citizens and were continually swept under the rug.
