Forget late-night fun at the MacDonalds drive-through back home. This is the funniest drive-through experience I’ve ever had and it quite possibly makes it onto my list of top 10 funniest experiences in Jamaica….EVER!
This is a public service announcement: If you’re ever at a late night police party in Whitehouse, St. Elizabeth and are heading back to Black River you CAN get snacks at the Unipet gas station in Sandy Ground in the middle of the night! Even if it’s closed! And trust me, if you run out of cigarettes or snacks after 10:00 you’re screwed until morning. NOTHING near Black River is open past 10:00pm.
Anyway, driving up to this Unipet gas station, it appears to be closed. All the lights are shut off and there’s no one in sight. BUT….if you’re with someone who knows what they’re doing you’ll soon discover that on the side of the building there’s a metal box in the wall. Big deal. BUT again, if you’re with someone who knows what they’re doing you’ll find out that the metal box is actually a slot that pushes in and out of the wall for the transfer of money and goods. And if the guy inside the building who manages the metal box is sleeping all you have to do is bang on it and yell at him lol.
That picture is exactly what it looks like. You yell into the metal box and make the guy inside walk through the store to pick up whatever you want and he’ll do it for you. He then tells you how much it costs, you drop the money in the box and your snacks magically appear!
What’s hilarious about this night is that there were four of us girls in the car and with my one police friend who was doing all the ordering for us. This scenario literally lasted for about 15 minutes because none of us could decide what we wanted, then we changed our minds, then we wanted Cheetos which they didn’t have, etc. All four of us were laughing so hard in the car that we could barely breathe and my friend doing the ordering kept yelling at the guy inside to wake up, knocking on the box and adding more to our order!
I swear I’m SO sad I didn’t video this whole episode but it was so dark out that the only way to capture anything was with a camera and flash. By the time we were finished our mission I was positive the guy inside was going to slide a pipe bomb through the box and kill us all!
So anyway, consider yourselves informed! If you’re ever desperate in the middle of the night make sure to drive around the gas stations to see if there’s a metal box on the wall anywhere!
