TCL Skiffle Bunch turns out 59 young pannists

Fifty-nine youngsters who spent their vacation learning how to play the national instrument graduated in splendour on Thursday at the TCL Skiffle Bunch panyard at Coffee Street, San Fernando. Divided into two groups, Tiny Bunch and Little Bunch, the youngsters took part in the annual mid-year pan programme which spanned six weeks. As she congratulated the young pannists, TCL’s group public relations manager Michelle Langton remarked: “Musical education, through the first-hand experience of playing a musical instrument, has insurmountable benefits for a child’s development. “It teachers patience and discipline, improves concentration and brain-body co-ordination, and is an excellent avenue for relaxation, which perhaps results in even holistic and integrative conceptions of health.” She noted that the TCL Group’s association with the Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra spanned a 29-year period and was still going strong. She lauded the steelpan for its artistic and cultural achievements at the Panorama competitions, world steelband music festival, Prime Minister’s Best Village competitions, and being the recipient of the Hummingbird Silver medal. Given the opportunity to display their new skills, the youngsters thrilled the audience with the sweet sounds of pan. Members of the orchestra also provided entertainment. —With reporting by Sascha Wilson
