T&T, India: Comedy bacchanal on same stage

Indian born comedy superstar, Vidur Kapur.

Come November 6, comedy fans will get their first taste of real comedy bacchanal originating from India. The East meets West International Comedy Fest, featuring Indian born comedy superstar, Vidur Kapur, and T&T’s comedy great, Learie Joseph will kick off at the Centre of Excellence in Tunapuna. This will be Kapur first visit to the Caribbean. Kapur was born in New Delhi, India and as a child was labeled the village clown. But, on the other hand, he excelled in school, from primary school right up to secondary level.
As a teenager he jumped at the opportunity to travel to the US to further his education, and he developed his comedy craft by watching the likes of America’s Bill Cosby, Jay Leno, Steve Martin, George Lopez, Martin Lawrence, and Chris Rock. He soon realised there were lots of opportunities in the short term, and that he could earn enough money to pay his tuition, and in his own words, “Western Union some back to India” for his mother to take care of the family household. Since then, Kapur has developed into one of the biggest born Indian comedy stars in the world. In 2008 and 2009, he was the best paid and highest grossing Indian comedian on the world circuit.

Kapur was recently featured in VH 1’s A Comic Journey, MTV’s Out Laugh Festival, and was the headline comic for double platinum selling comedy DVD, Indian Comedy Invasion. Kapur is best known for his quick wit and ability to mimic the different Indian accents. This allows him to create characters of Indian men, and women, young and old. His style is original and very clever. Kapur will join our very own, Learie Joseph, on stage. Joseph isn’t afraid to disclose his life story of growing up in an orphanage, and the fact that at times during his life he was homeless and forced to seek shelter in a gas station and abandoned buildings.

Joseph said he was not crushed by his adversities, and has, through love and laughter, risen above the many obstacles he encountered through the years. Today, Joseph is this country and the Caribbean’s most sought after stand-up comedian and sketch artiste, commanding a fan base of thousands across the region and beyond. Through humor and his unique anecdotes, Joseph addresses the most pressing social, political and economics issues of the day. And although fashioned to raise the awareness of the people of T&T, as well as the greater Caribbean, Joseph’s works exhibit a global relevance, that has presented him with opportunities to entertain audiences in North America and Canada.
