Wings take off - served on platters by `Winged Angels’ at Super Wings in Brooklyn.
They are really the hottest wings in Brooklyn. Super Wings, located at 1218 Union Street (between Nostrand & Rogers) just one block from Eastern Parkway, has really taken off and is on the lips of food lovers throughout the borough. With just five months in business, Super Wings won the prestigious `Best Wings In Brooklyn 2010' award. Owner Colette Burnett said she opened in September 2009 and the business has literally took off.
FLAVOR VARIETY
Super Wings NY was prominently featured on NYC-TV touting the Caribbean flavored wings that has gained popularity mainly because of the different variety of wings that are offered. Colette, who hails from Trinidad and has been living in the US for 14 years, explained that her wings vary from hot to mild and in between, noting the seven flavors that are enhanced by select, authentic Caribbean herbs and spices. Patrons can choose their favorites from: `Ginger Buff’`Trini Tamarind’`Pineapple Jerk’`Spice Island Rub’`Chilli Cilantro’`Bajan Merry Mango’ and `Island Bar-B-Que.’ "Most people love the `Trini Tamarind’ for the spicy and `Ginger Buff’ for the mildness," revealed Colette when asked about her most popular wings.
BRIDGING THE GAP
The quick service restaurant has developed a unique clientele which Colette described as: "Fifty-five percent Caribbean and Black American and the other are the yuppies who have made the Crown Heights community on Brooklyn their home. So now we’ve been able to bridge that gap. We are in the process of franchising the concept," said Colette who studies Business Administration at nearby Medgar Evers College. Prior to opening Super Wings, she held positions as Bank manager at Bank of America and Chase Bank before starting her own business.
TAKING CHARGE
"I had this idea to open my own business for three years. Even in the recession, I said to myself `If not now - when?’ It is my first foray in the restaurant business mainly because I absolutely love food and I looked at how the economy changes and how little we have control of our money and jobs," said Colette about her journey as a business owner. "I was listening to so many customers at the bank who were losing their homes and jobs. People had no control of their own economic power and their careers. Seeing how difficult things were for others, I felt I wanted to change that, so I decided to take charge of my own life and take things into my own hands, and, so far - so good!"
BEST WINGS AWARD
Colette said being validated by the voters who picked her wings as the `Best Wings in Brooklyn’ was definitely a high point in this new business venture. "It was more than a blessing, just the fact that only five months in business and competing against sixteen other restaurants, most of then quite established says a lot. We all took our wings to the competition and fed 2000 people who voted and we came out as the number one."
