The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) will begin to effect urgent repairs to elevators at the Kingston Public Hospital over the next six to nine weeks.

Consequently, some health services will be reorganised to accommodate the repair work, which may cause delays.

“The hospital relies heavily on these elevators to transport patients from the accident and emergency department to the various wards as well as other service areas such as the operating theatre,”  Mr.  Lyttleton  Shirley,  SERHA Board  Chairman  explained.

“Unfortunately  these elevators are extremely old and have begun to malfunction frequently. As a result, they are in need of urgent repair and upgrade in order to serve the hospital effectively.”

Mr. Shirley called a high level emergency meeting this afternoon with Ministry of Health Officials and senior officials of the Region to determine the most effective manner in which the hospital can continue to offer full health services to patients until the repairs are complete.

He said the Region regrets any inconvenience the delays associated with this exercise may cause and that measures will be put in place to assist patients and visitors in adjusting to the changes that will take place to accommodate the repair work.

In the meantime, the public is being urged to utilise the nearest health centre to them for non-critical illnesses.
