Ministry of Health Says Jamaicans Need to Guard Against the Spread of Influenza Observe Good Hygiene Practices to Limit the Spread of Influenza The Ministry of Health is advising persons to observe good hygiene practices to limit the spread of influenza, as the influenza season usually starts in October and can last until May each year, with most cases seen in Jamaica in January.
Director, Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services, Dr. Marion Bullock DuCasse says Jamaica has been experiencing a few sporadic cases of influenza, including the influenza virus sub-type A(H1) pdm09 which has caused death in some Caribbean islands. “This virus sub-type is seen occasionally here as one of the viruses in the influenza season.
We have confirmed cases sporadically and have seen three cases in the last four weeks. No deaths have been reported,” she stated.
Persons who are experiencing flu-like symptoms should stay home and take regular influenza medication until they are well. If symptoms persist or get worse or if you are experiencing severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea or difficulty breathing, you should visit your doctor, Health Centre or hospital immediately.
Persons are being advised to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing to limit the possibility of transmission of any influenza virus to others.
Also, wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Influenza A(H1) pdm09 is an Influenza A virus sub-type which causes a respiratory illness.
The symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, headache and body aches and fatigue.
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may also be experienced.
