Lancers FC Win Castries Council Soccerama

Lancers FC emerged winners of the Castries Football Council (CFC) season opening soccerama on Sunday at the Vigie playing field. Lancers FC executed a clinical 2 goals to nil victory over a youthful but spirited NYAH in the finals. Lancers FC’s goals came courtesy of second half efforts from veteran striker Nigel Springer. The soccerama marked the opening of the CFC 2009 senior football season. The day started with a march pass which included nine of the eleven participating teams, followed by a brief opening ceremony where the teams were addressed by CFC Chairman, Francis Daniel, and SLFA Vice President, Lyndon Cooper. After welcoming everyone, Daniel told players: “I do understand you are all starving for some form of competition in the Castries basin and hope the next 12 weeks will ignite the passion for the sport and spur on old and new rivalries in the city.” He spoke of a commitment by his executive to concentrate on improving the quality of the sport, ensure that players who are committed to the affiliates of Castries get the best facilities to play, engage in the most competitive league, have access to low cost equipment, get an equal opportunity to represent Castries at the National Level and obtain opportunities for job placement and career development. In return, Daniel called for players to stay committed to their club and club colours.

FC Pioneers (l) and Bisee Lions during a hard fought encounter on Sunday at the Vigie Playing Field. Speaking on behalf of the SLFA, Cooper thanked the CFC for the opportunity to attend the opening of the club competition and while acknowledging that football is the world’s greatest game he said: “The sport needs everybody’s help to maintain its greatness. Please think of football’s interest before your own. Think how your action may affect the image of the game. Talk about the positive things in the game and encourage others to watch and play fairly.” He announced that the SLFA is providing financial and technical support for the club competition. NYAH booked their place in the finals by getting pass Spartans 3 penalties to 2 in sudden death in the first round. In the next round, the young NYAH lads again held their nerve against far more experienced opposition when they defeated FC Pioneers 6 penalties to 5 in another sudden death thriller. That penalty shootout was highlighted by the calmness of the NYAH players. Some as young as 13 years old, stepped up and converted repeatedly against former national goal keeper Abraham Mentor. Lancers FC path to victory started with a hard fought 3 goals to 2 penalty shootout win over the Lancers FC U 21. Michael Marshall and Ryan Simon were the goal scorers in this match as the game end 1-1 at the end of regulation time. In the next round, Lancers FC survived a physical affair with city rivals VSADC. Once again they held their nerve in a penalty shootout to win 2 goals to nil. In the finals, the physical superiority of Lancers FC was evident and they were able to end the valiant run of the very promising NYAH team. Action in the league starts on Wednesday from 4:30pm when VSADC take on Lancers U 21 at the Vigie Playing Field. This is followed by double headers on Saturday and Sunday.
