PLEASE ENCOURAGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS YOU KNOW TO ENTER!!!!!!!!!!!
THE MAIA CHUNG AUTISM AND DISABILITIES AMBASSADORS COMPETITION
The Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation Ambassadors 2011 is new project to be done in tandem with all high schools interested in participating in the project.
Our main sponsor is the Kiwanis Club of Spanish Town Division 23 West under the leadership of lieutenant governor Anthony Williams.
This contest was crafted as a result of a noted high level of fear and disdain among the youth population for the disabled.
It is to foster tolerance inclusion and hopefully channel more able persons into careers to care for the disabled, as trained individuals in this area are rare.
There will be 6 Ambassadors chosen from 6 competing high schools the competition kicks off in November youth month.
We start receiving entries on November 1 -2010 entry forms are available by emailing the Foundation at mcautismfoundation@gmail.com.
The activities for the selection of the Ambassadors will begin at the time of entry deadline November and will see competitors beginning their work to win at that time. The competition culminates in global Autism month 2011 on the 28th of April.
The six Ambassadors will be the ones who are adjudged by their high school guidance counselors and community service advisors to have carried out the most helpful activities for the disabled population, in their area for the judging period.
The integrity and actual adherence to criteria will be monitored by school administration, as reported by students and verified by the individuals or groups target]ed for assistance.
The help can include Autistics but is not restricted to Autistic persons.
The adjudication and eventual winners will be the responsibility of the administration members highlighted i.e. guidance counselor and community service advisor as well as The Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation.
The criteria are:
visiting with the disabled and helping them around the home, job, school, church or disabilities in safe and crucial activities in the area where the club is located this must be done where appropriate and safe for the person in need
cook meals for them, run errands as well as servicing needs where appropriate that they are unable to do for themselves
including a disabled person on an appropriate trip and or activity safely (this disabled person would be the competitors competing choice )
spreading the message of being kind to the disabled in a creative fashion that they have designed - i.e. posters, giving presentations to the congregation at church and their schools, designing disabilities awareness displays for their local libraries
Studying about one disability of their choice and writing a 1000 word essay that will be submitted to The Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation by January 30 - 2011 for judging
conducting and organising a special Christmas treat for a disabilities home of their choice for December 2010
The Prizes are The Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Ambassador Trophies, a ten thousand dollar cash prize a new laptop for each participating club's winner and a 2 week internship at a media house to provide exposure to media skills with a view to gaining work world experience that will help them become great employees.
These will be presented at an awards ceremony on April 28-2010 which will be the third anniversary of the establishment of The Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation.
The aim of the competition is to foster greater awareness love and care towards the Jamaican disabled population and to get the message in at the grass roots level.
The Ambassadors programme is the beginning of another initiative by the Foundation, in fulfilling its mandate to seek to provoke discussion debate and thought about how the disabled community are treated, break away fear and stereotyping of these individuals and hopefully sparking an interest among competitors to work in fields that provide service to the disabled in Jamaica, as the Foundation is in need of more professionals who can enable and empower this under serviced population of Jamaica.
The Foundation believes that there is presently a dearth in the understanding by the Jamaican community of the power of community, in enacting progress change and development without the aid of State, to create a better nation.
