Day four was set up to be a doozy and boy, did it deliver!!!! With 49 finals set to run, fortunes were changing by the minute. Early on in the day Edwin Allen pulled ahead of Holmwood and the upset buzz was making its way through the vast crowd (capacity 33 thousand +). It was nip and tuck in the Boys division as points were being picked off by Bellefield, Holmwood Boys, Camperdown and others. Midway through the afternoon Wolmers took a lead only to be overtaken by the might RABALAC (Calabar High). Now the buzz as Calabar getting sweet revenge on KC after losing by 1 point in 2009.
The sentimental favorite however was Wolmers. Champs started in 1910, a hundred yeas ago and Wolmers was the inaugural winner. They won again in 1956. It was only fitting then that on the centennial Wolmers should be the sentimental pick of everyone. Let's face it, KC, JC and Calabar had made champs their own little playground year after year.
So back and forth it went through the sprint finals, distance finals, some field events. Holmwood Girls finally separated themselves from the pack and everyone new there would not be a new champion there. Even with that, the battle with Edwin Allen Girls was enthralling. St. Jago, Vere Technical, Manchester and Herbert Morrison made it even more exciting.
So back to the Boys. At 7:30PM, the announcer gave the points update. No one expected what he had to say. Going into the 4x400 relays, Calabar and Wolmers Boys were tied on points. The ultimate finish, one race, this time, for all the marbles, winner takes the trophy was all set. The tension was palpable, the crowd of 30K+ was screaming their heads off and it would come down to this, 8:10PM, last race. The vast throng of overseas media representatives have never seen anything like this. The BBC crew, broadcasting live was living a dream.
At the starters gun, Calabar went for the juggler on lap one closely followed by Vere and Wolmers who closed the gap by the hand over. The second leg saw Wolmers and Vere edging ahead with Calabar staying in close touch. By the third leg the writing was appearing on the wall and it would come down to the last lap. At the hand over, Wolmers went ahead pursued by Vere with Calaber in fourth. On the back stretch, Calabar made a move but could not muster the speed to catch Wolmers and Vere who by now had taken control of the race. At the finish, Vere 1st, Wolmers 2nd....and Wolmers Boys are the 2010 Champions!!!!!! It could not have been scripted any better, win the first edition, win on the half century and then top it off on the centennial.
Well done Holmwood and Wolmers, congratulations on fantastic performances!!!!!!!
