The United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed December 10, as Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring to the attention ‘of the peoples of the world’ the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.

In order to promote and protect all human rights, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was established in December 1993 and 2013 marks 20 years since that office’s establishment.

International Human Rights Day also signifies the work of human rights defenders worldwide.

To mark the occasion Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) in collaboration with High Commissioner Mathu Joyini and the South African High Commission
will hold a church service to commemorate the day on Sunday December 8-2013.

Human Rights defenders work every day to end discrimination, reporting and investigating human rights violations and providing support for the victims or families of the victims.

Nelson Mandela who died December 5, 2013 was one of the world most renowned human rights defender, known for dismantling the legacy of apartheid in South Africa through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality and fostering racial reconciliation.

The JFJ Service is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Christ Church, Vineyard Town, 6 Antrim Road, Kingston 3 (off Deanery Road), Jamaica.
