A traditional moment has been getting a contemporary twist which seems to be catching on with many brides-to-be when planning their special day.
Many brides have dared and are ready to break with the tradition of having the typical wedding cake and have sought to upstage that with cupcakes.
Some have thrown the traditional wedding cake right out the window, while others have incorporated the two.
"Many brides request a centrepiece with a cake on top, which keeps the traditional aspect of a wedding and then cupcakes on tiers going down. To date, we have only received one request for only cupcakes", noted Ramona Porter, co-founder of Kingston Mini Cakes.
According to Porter, the option of going the unconventional way by having cupcakes is really based on two reasons. "The cost factor is one as it can cost you half of what it would on a regular wedding cake. And then you just have those brides who just want to be very different."
Daring to be different allows the bride to maximise her satisfaction while also pleasing her guests.
'When orders are made for cupcakes, we require a flavour per dozen. So they can decide if they want to mix the flavours for variety. We also cater to vegans, so if they are going to be at the wedding, vegan cupcakes can be requested."
The fruit cake, which has stamped its name on the wedding tradition, seem to be on its way out. "It can be done but it really isn't a popular choice. Vanilla and chocolate I would say are the top two flavours."
While there may be some restrictions on the design of cupcakes, creativity knows no bounds and even the smallest of cupcakes can have signature looks.
"Brides can state what they want their designs to be and we will give our suggestions too. We can also provide custom made wrappers for the cupcakes which would include details like their names, which have been requested before," adds Porter.
Porter notes that the shift towards cupcakes are from younger brides "We find that the older brides tend to stick with tradition".
