Every once in a while, a designer pops on the scene using elements from everyday life. Jean Paul Gaultier is one such designer who has received no formal training, but has showcased his designs all over the world dressing the likes of Marilyn Manson, Kylie Minogue and Madonna. He has also worked with brands such as Hermes. Here in Jamaica, we have our own cadre of local talents who are not formally trained, but have been making an impact with their gorgeous designs.
Simone 'Tasha' Natashi Gordon is a home-grown designer. Growing up watching both her mother and grandmother construct garments, this young mother of two developed a yen for fabrics and designs.
Self-taught, Tasha employs bold, bright colours and intricate detailing to create the uniquely embellished hand-made designs that carry the label T and T. The name she coined from her name, as well as her daughter's - Tianne.
A St Mary girl, Tasha adopted the Sunshine City, but completed secondary and tertiary-level education in Kingston.
In an interview with Outlook, she revealed that she gets her inspiration from the beauty and culture of Jamaica, as well as her colourful backyard garden. The soft designs and themes used stand out in her feminine creations.
"I thought that it was important to get into fashion because it was something that I was good at and could make a good living from. Instead of working for somebody else, I opted to start my own business doing something that I love, while making a living from it at the same time," she said.
What is quite noticeable in the designs of the young businesswoman is her ability of mixing textured fabrics and colours. Tasha is also known for her intricate hand-beading using a variety of semi-precious stones. Expressing in the interview that she is a lover of art, she went on to reveal that her talents span beyond clothing. Belts, scarves, sarongs, handbags, jewellery and artwork are other ways through which she channels her creative energy.
Come this Christmas season, the designer has a new collection that will be available inside Kerry Manwomanhome fashion boutique.
"The new collection is more focused on the beading," she said, "giving each new design a more structured and architectural look. She continued, "I love art too and so this new collection is more art-inspired."
Each piece is designed with comfort first in mind followed by the ability to stand out." Most of the designers' collections feature tie and dye prints, ethnic fabrics, semi-precious stones, rayon knits, cottons, chiffon and denim.
She gave Outlook a peek at her new collection.
