About the Disability Friendly Awards Gala
This programme is the first of its kind in the Caribbean, and will part of a national thrust to broaden nation discussions around improving access for persons with disabilities in all spheres of the Jamaica society.
The Disability Friendly Awards Gala is an initiative of the Jamaica Council for Persons with disabilities and is being hosted in collaboration with the Office of the Jamaican Consul General to Canada.
Event Details
A Jamaica 50 designated event, this black-tie affair will be a significant and important one. The event will join the rest of the world in marking 2012 as the 20th anniversary of International Day of People with Disability, a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.
Under the theme “Jamaica: Removing Barriers… Creating Access”, the function will also launch the 2012 National Disability Awareness Week Programme.
Keynote Speaker
The keynote speaker, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Canada His Honour David C. Onley, epitomizes the event theme.
A tireless advocate for accessibility improvement, His Honour has lived with polio and post-polio syndrome since the age of three and became Canada’s first senior television broadcaster with a visible disability.
A popular news anchor, host/producer, science and technology specialist, and weatherman for 22 years, he showed that ability outshines disability. He has broken through social barriers and become a role model.
Award Categories
There will be nine (9) awards categories, each reflecting key areas of importance to the national development strategies for persons with disabilities. Nomination opens soon.
