Haiti is emerging as a hot spot for tourists, according to figures released by travel conglomerate Expedia. According to Expedia’s Director of Lodging Partner Services for the Caribbean, Demetrius Canton, although Haiti is not a traditional popular Caribbean destination, interest in the country is on the rise. He noted that total demanded generated to Haiti via mobile devices last year rose by 800 percent compared to 2013.
“With 40 new hotel partnerships formed in 2014, Expedia’s footprint in Haiti is quickly providing our hoteliers with global visibility, strategic marketing tools and the latest technology,” Canton added.
Haiti’s minister of Tourism, Stephanie Villedrouin credits Expedia with helping to boost the industry.
“Throughout close collaboration with Expedia, we look forward to increasing our exposure to markets around the world via marketing campaigns, strategic promotions and the latest technology.”
Earlier this year, President Michel Martelly said he wants to bring Haiti back to what it said was its “hey-dey” in the 1950s. He noted that the role of tourism as a vehicle for job creation, poverty reduction and economic growth in the French speaking Caribbean nation, is undeniable.
