In the Caribbean, the coconut is a fruit that is widely used by many due to its multi-purpose appeal. With its hard green or yellow shells when freshly picked, or dark brown husks when dried, the insides of this popular fruit reveals a fleshy white jelly which is often soft or hardened. Scientifically, the coconut is known as “Cocos Nucifera” , the fruit of the coconut palm. It was later called “Coco” by the Spanish and Portugese meaning “monkey face” due to the three eyes or indentations found at the base of the nut. The benefits of the coconut are definitely innumerable- here are some enlightening facts about this versatile fruit.

COCONUT WATER
In Trinidad , a cool drink of coconut water can quench the thirst of those exercising around the Queens Park Savannah, or make the perfect choice of drink on a scorching afternoon. But the water of the coconut is beneficial in many other ways. Its naturally low in carbs, low in sugars and essentially 99% fat free! One of the best hydrators for the body, coconut water also contains anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-microbial properties that help to cure diseases. It is widely used in hair care - preventing dandruff, lice eggs and dry scalp, which helps to promote regrowth for damaged, dry hair. It is also used as a main ingredient for conditioners. For skin care, it can be used as massage oil or a natural remedy for dry skin, helping to delay wrinkles and sagging skin. Skin infections such as psoriasis and dermatitis can also be treated with coconut oil.

  • I cannot think of a more refreshing drink on a hot day. The coconut is one of those unique food items that have multiple uses. Oh how I miss having one straight off the tree.
  • I am sure Jamaicans can come up with a few more uses for the coconut.  As children we drank the milk  in our choc'late tea and in our porridge. We ate the soft jelly and if it was a bit hard, we called it 'bluff' and ate it with sugar.  Coconut milk is still a staple in our rice and peas and soups.  And have you heard the old time saying that coconut water  'wash off yu heart'?   Also of course there is the riddle associated with the coconut --'Sen bway go call dacta, dacta come before bway.'   And who wrote the song--'Drink yu cocanat wata, cocanat, It good for you dawta, cocanat, Coca gat a lot a iron, cocanat,  Meck yu strong like a lion, cocanat'    Hey when last you had a nice ice-cold jelly from the Jelly man?
