In sweet T&T the end of the festive Christmas season signals the commencement of Carnival celebrations. However, amidst the plethora of parties, fetes and festivities, the folks at bmobile are ever mindful of our Caribbean brothers and sisters in Haiti who met severe tragedy one year ago on January 12.

At a recent Christmas dinner event held at the Sir Arthur Lewis Hall, St Augustine, and hosted by local missionary Avonelle Hector-Joseph and her organisation, ITNAC (Is There Not A Cause), 54 Haitian students studying at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus were treated to an evening of food, fun, entertainment and a healthy dose of goodwill.

Bmobile presented the students with 54 Motorola cell phones, each containing $60 worth of call time. Gervon Abraham, manager External Relations and Gov't Affairs for TSTT was on hand to share in the merriment, which included performances by calypsonians Winston Scarborough, The Original Defosto Himself and Edwin “Crazy” Ayoung. “It is truly good to see that in the midst of us Trinibagonians celebrating Christmas into Carnival, we still take into consideration those who have fallen on hard times and who still need our support,” Abraham said.

Of the performance of a song by Defosto, dedicated to the people of Haiti, Abraham said, “It was good to have a sobering moment to celebrate the camaraderie and brotherhood in the Caribbean region, and it is indeed heart-warming to be able to do simple things in order to make these students’ situation even a bit more bearable, for example facilitating a phone call to family and friends in their home country. “As we look forward to 2011 and the upcoming Carnival season, we at Bmobile plan to undertake more initiatives to give back and encourage philanthropy within our community,” he stated.
