Guyana fashion

When people think of Caribbean fashion, Guyana is hardly likely to come to mind.Guyanese designer Sonja Noel is on a mission to change that. The owner and founder of Mariska's Designs, Noel has been staging an annual fashion weekend in Georgetown, Guyana, over the last four years with the aim of giving exposure to talented designers and aspiring models. The 2010 edition of the Guyana Fashion Weekend took place at the end of October at the Pegasus Hotel. While the majority of designers were Guyanese, there were representations from two T&T designers: Anthony Reid for Meiling and Deron Attzs of San Fernando. Attzs in particular caused quite a stir with his flowing, dramatic pieces. Among the designers who showcased their pieces were Noel herself, who showed a children's line in addition to her adult clothing, Olympia Small-Sonaram, who wowed with her pieces, Christopher Goodridge, whose wearable art added an artistic twist to the event and stunning swimsuits from model cum designer Meleesa Payne and Renee Chester.
