Generation next needs our help!

A day usually reserved for church, late breakfast, time to spend with the family, maybe do the chores we did not complete on Saturday, best describes what I consider to be a typical Sunday. On Sunday March 14th my family and I did the late breakfast and turned on the television. The very popular movie ‘Avatar’ was on. I quickly called my kids inviting them to come see what this movie had to offer as I heard great reviews about it and had not had the opportunity to visit the movies to see it on big screen. It was my assumption it was a movie to be enjoyed by all until I heard what one would consider to be the less subtle foul language. My son corrected me and advised “mummy it’s PG13.” I was a bit surprised as most of the kids in my children’s classes had seen it. Though I was not too comfortable with the content of the language used I proceeded to view. Soon after ‘Avatar’ was done on one of our local stations another movie came on “Rated R.” My response: “11am on a Sunday Rated R, they can’t be serious!” Before switching the station, I quickly summoned my kids to the shower and remained in my living room to see the title of this movie and what it may be about. Ninja ‘something’ I believe was the name. It started off with the most obscene language and extreme violence, the chopping of heads and lots of blood. I ask you my people, what do we expect from our kids, from the youth, from our young ones? People open your eyes and your ears. Certainly there is an audience for the Rated R movies, but for heaven’s sake no pun intended, there is a more suited time for airing. Monday to Sunday 6am–10pm does not cut it! What do we expect when there is senseless fighting, stealing and raping? Wake up my people. Let’s stop blaming the government past or present. Those of us in control let’s motivate and inspire. The airwaves of radio and television play a very important role in our society. The lyrics of the tunes played, the roles the actors play in the very popular movies translate to what we see in our schools, the violence on the streets, the bad boy mentality and disrespect to adults. I sometimes listen to my kids recite word for word of the lyrics of their favourite cartoon shows. They all are like sponges absorbing everything around them, soaking in all the good and the bad and making it part of their identity. As adults, teachers, principles, entrepreneurs, leaders, media workers we need to lead our youth in the right direction. We need to take responsibility for their future. Let’s feed them with positivity. Let’s look out for our neighbour’s children. It’s the only way out. Concerned Mom
