Dynamic Kids are Junior Carnival winners

The sun was out in all its glory on Sunday July 12 to celebrate with the young ones as they made their way from the Vigie Multi purpose complex through the city, to the Mindoo Phillip Park. It was the celebration of Junior carnival, which this year featured nine junior carnival bands, and hundreds of young participants from across the island. The bands leading the charge were Dynamic Kids who collaborated with Mas Action to present “The Market Place,” XS Energy; Gems of the motherland, Charmalion; The Dye Fantasy, Cozy Kids; Sailor band, Rituals; Mardi Gras, Saint Lucian Spirit; Jambo Afrika, Just Us Kids; Pirates Finding Treasure and Extreme Kiddies; The Sky is the Limit. Most of the bands also took part in the individual of the year category as well as the Junior carnival king and queen competition. The parade which started about 12 noon ended at the Mindoo Phillip Park shortly before 2pm where the bands assembled before taking to the stage. Scores of Saint Lucians lined the city streets on Sunday making what is normally a quiet day in the city, a very busy one with onlookers and backed up traffic.

At the event itself, before the bands took to the big stage, participants from this year’s junior calypso competition and RC Jam got a chance to perform before their peers on Sunday, a welcomed first at this event. The individual costumes were then brought on stage, where they were judged before a panel and then the bands showed what they were made of as tiny tots to teens enjoyed their moment in the spotlight. The final segment involved the junior king and queens and whilst the judges deliberated a number of young Soca artistes kept things alive. The final results; the individual of the year title was awarded to Sharma Sensei of XS Energy. The 2009 junior queen of the bands is Jada Francis of Dynamic Kids representing Wivadez, second place Tanisha William of Rituals. The junior king of the bands title went to Simeon Charles of Saint Lucian Spirit portraying Chaka Zulu with Jaheel Calderon of XS energy coming in second. In the band of the year category, in third place XS Energy, second place Just Us Kids and the 2009 Junior Band of the year title went to Dynamic Kids. (By Toni Nicholas)
