A contract has been signed to start renovation and refurbishing work on the Nannyville Health Centre in St. Andrew.

The work on the Centre is expected to cost $26,886,854.00 with an additional $24,601,951.00 to be used to purchase furniture and equipment for a total of $51,488,805.00.

Speaking at the contract signing today, Minister of Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, said that the building has not been used for over 20 years and so he was happy to note that by the end of July the health centre should be completed.

“The project comes at a time when the Ministry is putting increased focus on the importance of having primary health care services at the community level. Our broader aim is to increase access to health services in communities as part of efforts to combat the prevalence of non communicable diseases. NCDs are the most common cause of death in Jamaica and represent the most important cause of morbidity in the country.”

He said the focus is also on “making sure that prevention and treatment services are available in communities to limit the need for persons to seek care at the hospital level because of advanced illness.”

The work, which is being carried out by Alphasure Structures and Roofing include electrical and a/c works, external works to include the erection of a chain link boundary fence and paving of the parking lot as well as general renovation and roof repairs.

Services to be offered include curative, maternal and child health and dental care. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of July 2014.

The National Health Fund is providing grant funding for the project.
