Can you recall the stir Paula Abdul made, when she shot to fame in Hollywood’s spotlight as a singer in the late 1980s with her look? The girl, who rose from cheer-leader of the Los Angeles Lakers, and went on to become one of the most sought-after choreographers at the height of the video music era, didn’t only wow people with her intricate dance moves or her string of pop music-R&B hits. The fact that no one could actually determine her ethnic background, was also one of the reasons she was so interesting to everyone, especially men. They often asked the question—is she African-American, Egyptian, Brazilian or Indian? Paula once said in an interview, that while dating former talk show host/comedian Arsenio Hall, he would often ask her to switch her role during their intimate moments.“He would ask me...so what am I gonna get tonight...who are you going to be? “This was kinda fun,” she said. But Hall is not alone. There are many men who love and enjoy the exoticness of a multi-ethnic woman. I can remember distinctively, while working at a 5-Star hotel here in Trinidad, guests would come up to me and ask: “Excuse me what are you mixed with?” At first I found it to be quite rude, but once I spoke with these people I realised there was a complete flip side to the “racial purity” all of us preach some time. There are people who actually adore and celebrate a multi-ethnic person, and are also amazed that one person could represent so many nations. My ethnic back ground includes, African, Indian (Madras), Spanish (Venezuela), French (Creole), Portuguese, Chinese and Polish. But I was often just described as ‘d Chinee rasta girl’ (when I had dreads). Bottom line is, I love being exotic...I love the way my look confuses people, and I love the fact that some men, regardless of their ethnic background, love their women mixed.
The T&T Guardian interviewed a few men on this topic, and this was what they had to say:
Nicoli Reyes, a 28-year-old public servant, said he liked a woman who is mixed with African, Indian and Chinese. “This would be my ideal woman, of course her ways must match the way she looks. But I love a woman who is mixed with these three nations. “I find the sexiness and the appeal is so hard to ignore. They’re just exotic, and I like that.”
Meanwhile, Kurt a 29-year-old marketing manager thinks a Mulatto woman is as good as it gets.
“To me the most beautiful women are Mulattos. You can’t beat that kind of mixture. I also never met an ugly Mulatto. Besides, I find mixed women are a lot more sensual and exciting.”
KK, 25, an aspiring chef, did not hesitate to say he liked any woman who was mixed with Spanish and Indian. “Gimme any woman who have that Spanish and Indian mix in dem....ah I love it. Spanish women know how to put it down, and Indian women know how to love dey man. So having d two ah dem in one. Oh laaaaaaaad! “
While these men loved a multi-ethnic woman with a specific mix, Khan, who described himself as a callaloo, said it really didn’t matter what his girl was mixed with because he just loved mixed women.
“I have been on all ends of the rainbow. I’ve dated Spanish, African, Indian and Chinese girls. If I had to choose, though, I prefer those mixtures, but I love them all.”
Ralph J, a 30-year-old real estate agent, echoed Khan’s sentiments.
“Well I have had them all. I really don’t care what a woman is mixed with, just as long as she is mixed. I just find them so interesting.”
Keith Clint, a 34 year-old lecturer, said he likes them with a bit of Latin flavour, Indian, and African. “I love Spanish women, and as a Trinidadian, a sweet Dougla can get my attention any day. This mix is extremely exotic.”
Our last interviewee said he did not have a preference in a specific blend. “I come from so many different people, it really doesn’t matter to me. I just like nice women. I don’t really care what they’re mixed with.”
Multi ethnic women rock
In a world where so many things are negative, it is nice to know that some of us are happy to welcome five nations in one. Multi-ethnic women are not just exotic, but they play a vital role in society with regards to instilling in their children, the fact that race doesn’t matter, and that each one is beautiful. As one multi-ethnic woman put it— “We are all one from the other...just look at us...we rock.”
