Caricom pays tribute to Caribbbean literary icons

Trevor Rhone. GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Caribbean Community (Caricom) governments have paid tribute to three internationally renowned literary figures who died earlier this month. In a statement, the Guyana-based Caricom Secretariat said the region had lost Jamaica’s Trevor Rhone, Suriname’s Henk Tjon and Trinidad and Tobago’s Wayne Brown during a one week period. It described Rhone and Tjon as multi-talented, internationally acclaimed theatre artists, while Brown was an acclaimed poet, creative writing teacher, short story writer, critic and journalist. Caricom said that through his exceptional talents as playwright, director and actor, Rhone contributed extensively to the cultural development of Jamaica and the Caribbean.

It said Tjon, who died on 18 Sept., actively participated in every Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) since its inception in 1972, and served seven times as designer and artistic director of Suriname’s cultural contingent to CARIFESTA. Caricom said that Brown, who died on the same day as Trevor Rhone on 15 Sept., was responsible for the development of a new generation of writers in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Henk Tjon."The Caribbean Community applauds the excellent artistic contribution of these great cultural icons and mourns their deaths which have undoubtedly created a void in the continued development of the region’s culture," the Secretariat said.
