The Club partnered with the Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation in identifying the needs of autistic children in the educational setting in Jamaica and brought awareness to the public on issues related to autists.

We conducted several projects with a selected institution, the Adonijah Group of Schools that has a large population of autists with ages ranging from 5-18 years. Projects done focused on improving infrastructure at the school and training of staff.

One major project we were presented with was to coordinate travel arrangements for the Principal, Mrs Ruthlyn James, to attend an autism conference in Barbados.

The club received sponsorship from Caribbean Airlines and the Bridgetown Barbados Lions Club to make this venture a success. Her attendance bore fruit as she was able to meet leading specialists in the area of autism which enhanced the management of affected students.

One such specialist was Behavioral Optometrist, Dr. Jeffrey Getzell, who visited the school subsequently through the efforts of Mrs. James.

Various tests were conducted on students and a formal training session donefor staff and Lions on aspects of Behavioral Optometry.

The mid to long term goal to construct a multi- million dollar state of the art facility for the Adonijah School is on stream with various consults with donor agencies, the school and the Mona Lions.

We are anxiously awaiting acquisition of additional land and further funding to pursue this venture, full speed ahead, in the upcoming year.

We were also happy to sponsor The Lions Club of Mona Award for Miss Sicourney Jackson, student at Queens High, winner or the 2012 Autism Ambassador’s Competition.

In this competition, organized by the Maia Chung Autism and Disabilities Foundation, youths are challenged to bring awareness to their community about disabilities and to assist in the care of the disabled.

The award was presented in April in celebration of Global Autism Awareness Month.
