Aarti Gosine’s second children’s book was recently launched at Nigel R Khan Booksellers La Romaine office on March 17. Her book More Adventures in the Magic Cave is the second instalment of the Magic Cave triology, which has garnered a lot of fans along the way. She intends to release her third children’s book later this year. In More Adventures In The Magic Cave, the twins, Samantha and Alan, and their best friend Mark are home on two months’ vacation and are eager to continue their adventures to strange and distant lands. This time, however, in addition to having lots of fun, they uncover a secret that may change their friendship forever. That will make it three books in two years for her and though it sounds like a simple endeavour its quite the opposite. Getting a book published is difficult especially for up and coming writers. “It’s extremely hard to get a book published in Trinidad and for authors to make a living off of writing. Amanda Hocking has inspired me, because even though publishing companies turned her down she decided to self-publish by going the E-book route. She is now a wild success and an inspiration to many writers,” said Gosine.

As a part time creative writing tutor, Gosine observed that kids weren’t reading enough. This prompted her to get her ideas together for the Magic Cave book series as she also noticed that there were limited local books written for the seven-10 age group. The books are written in Standard English using a couple ‘big’ words’ that encourages students to ask questions and broaden their vocabulary. “One thing I’ve noticed with the kids is that they don’t understand the difference between Standard English and slang. This book is geared towards strengthening English Language skills as well as entertaining the kids,” said Gosine. The feedback Gosine received from kids and parents about The Magic Cave thus far has been encouraging. The children enjoy the fantasy aspect of the book. They get lost in the story because it stimulates their imagination and it also influences their love for reading. Gosine’s been writing since she was eight years old and submitted many short stories to the Junior Express and entered writing competitions throughout her teenage years. Her father is a well-known author and writing coach, who has published several school texts under the name V Ramsamooj Gosine. He has also published two novels. Gosine attended Naparima Girls and oddly enough holds a degree from the University of the West Indies in Chemistry and Management. She is the Managing Director of JAV Publishing House Ltd and Trinidad Weddings.
