A strong signal for Carnival

Caribbean son and Jamaican artiste, Busy Signal, says he’s ready for T&T Carnival. With a monster soca track that’s receiving rave reviews locally, the artiste will, in no uncertain terms, be a big part of the upcoming C2K11 season. From dancehall to sweet soca The track, Get Outta My Way, is one of two hits that have been receiving support from the local public. The second song, Bend Ova, on the 2011 Oil Mas riddim, has also been a welcomed dose of musical vibe for local listeners. In the interim of the approaching season, however, the artiste said he would tour Europe for one month. “I’ll be performing in Italy first. This is my third European tour but only the second time with the High Voltage Band,” he told the T&T Guardian. Having released his album D.O.B. this past summer, fans have certainly lapped up the hits, among them, Gyal Bounce, Picante and One More Night. With the 2011 Carnival releases a mere addition in recent weeks, Busy Signal—real name Reanno Gordon—said he had already received requests from the European market for his performance of those very tracks. “I love soca music for a long time. I grew up on your local music, from songs like Tiny Winy and artistes like Arrow, Byron Lee and all the others. Now, I’m trying to do my own style and fuse it with your culture.” The 28-year-old entertainer, like many other Jamaican artistes, considers T&T a second home. “I am appreciated in Trinidad and I appreciate that,” he said. Highlighting his August performance at the Earthstrong of A Lyricist concert, which celebrated Bunji Garlin’s birthday, the dancehall star said, “Performing on stage in Trinidad is full of energy. I like that.” Reinventing dancehall Busy Signal is a VP recording artiste. His album, he said, stood for a new era of dancehall music. The melodies and general flow of his music somehow injects a feel-good vibe, one of reminiscent thought. The artiste, however, assured that his method of unconventional thinking would always see him bringing something fresh to the fore, a general assurance that has possibly led to the two massive soca-inspired tracks he has unleashed on the front steps of soca island. On the issue of worldwide acceptance and his European tour, Busy said, “I’m so excited to go out there and perform.” He pinpointed the fact that most of his fans in Europe hardly spoke English, and often found it difficult to request his autograph. But nevertheless they have always been seen singing along to the music. Message to youths When the T&T Guardian spoke with Busy Signal, T&T had been thrown into mourning following the assassination of soca artiste, Blazer Dan. While he himself was not acquainted with Blazer, he expressed condolences to family and friends. “Youths, we don’t need the violence,” he said. “We have great food, great music—enjoy, have fun, be jovial, deal with things peacefully. People need to reason and understand each other. We don’t need to be illiterate and express ignorance.” Busy Signal’s tour of Europe kicked off on October 23.
